5th Annual PhilaPets Party

Can you believe it? PhilaPets has been in business for the last five and a half years!!! What started out as a way for Deirdre to make a few extra dollars before vet school started as turned into a business that now has 50+ people on staff and servicing more than 1300 clients!

To celebrate our success, the PhilaPets Team came together at Ladder 15 to celebrate another year of caring for Philadelphia’s pets. A great time was had by all!

Since we don't work in a "traditional" office environment, this is a great time for Pet Care Specialist to catch up and to meet all the new faces. We also use this opportunity to acknowledge all the hard work the sitters do day-in and day-out and to give special, public recognition to sitters that go above and beyond with our annual awards.

What: Pink Paws for Life Walk to Cure Pet Cancer in Philadelphia

Join us on Sunday, August 16th for a non-competitive walk to raise awareness and funds for pet cancer research, resources, and educational programs. You can register yourself and your pet online for the walk or make a donation to the non-profit organization if you’re unable to attend the event.

Starting line at Lloyd Hall. Proceed to MLK Drive (aka West River Drive)

Registration opens at 7:00am

Race begins at 9:00am

What: Society Hill Canine Blood Drive
When: Thursday August 20, 2009 - Thursday August 20, 2009 [12:00pm - 4:00pm]
Where: Society Hill Veterinary Hospital 502 S. 2nd Street, Philadelphia PA 19147 Map
The Society Hill Veterinarian Hospital will be hosting a canine blood drive in partnership with the Penn Animal Blood Bank on Saturday, August 20th, from noon until 4:00pm on their premises, located at the southeast corner of 2nd and Lombard Streets.

Your dog can donate blood if he/she:

• Has a good temperament and is a willing volunteer
• Weighs between 55 and 150 pounds
• Is between 1 and 6 years old (donors are retired when they reach 8 years of age
• Is in excellent health
• Has blood that is type DEA 1.1 negative (a simple blood test is performed on site)

Hot Weather and Your Pets

The dog days of summer are here and, like us, you’re probably enjoying spending more time outside with your pets on rooftop decks and backyard barbecues. Animals can be much more sensitive to the hot weather, so know the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke:

• Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
• Drooling
• Mild weakness
• Stupor or collapse

Take these precautions to prevent your pet from becoming overheated or suffering from heat stroke:

• Always have fresh, clean water available to your pet – don’t forget to carry water with you on those longer walks or trips to the dog park
• Take your dog out for longer walks and exercise during the early morning and late evening hours, when the temperatures and sidewalks are cooler.
• Give your dog a light summer haircut, leaving an inch of fur for protection against sunburn.
• If using sunscreen or insect repellent, make sure the product is labeled specifically for use on animals.
• Never leave an animal alone in a parked vehicle, even if the windows are down.
